Y-u-c-k barf, garf, and snarf

You'd think they'd know.

New words

Read the other day that Webster is considering adding a new word to its dictionary — "humongous," meaning something large or huge.

You mean to tell me that there never was a word like that??????? Are you trying to tell me my kids don't know English??????

Jeez. Y-u-c-k barf, garf, and snarf. You'd think those people would know more about the English language.

The free bridge

The Nebraska City river bridge became a "free" bridge in 1955 and the town rolled out the red carpet for a celebration over the Fourth.

That should answer a number of inquiries we've received in recent days.

The activities included boat races on the river, fireworks, band festival, circus, Jack Paar stage show, square dancing and the Fourth of July program and fireworks.

Co-chairmen were Verne Jones and the late Clemmy Holmes.

Over 1,400 vehicles crossed the bridge that opening day. (The state man said the other day the traffic count now was 4,100 a day and projected to near 7,000.)

The county attorney

We've been watching the campaign and recall of the county attorney in Cuming county. As reported in the News-Press the other day, John Feller, 27, is the new county attorney.

We have learned about John and the problems of the Cuming county attorney's office from our most informed News-Press reader, Marilyn Feller, a sister.

Marilyn will be a senior this fall at the University. She is working this summer at the News-Press as an all-around young woman in the proofreading, production and ad departments. She also "winds" Associated Press coded tape for John Quinlan.

John tried for the county attorney's job in the election, but lost out. The voters removed the elected official, put in another, then removed him and put John Feller on the job.

John is a graduate of the University Law College. His wife is a country school teacher.

Country Music

Nebraska City will have its own "concert" and although the music group won't rock 'em like the Beach Boys, Nebraska City retailers figure it'll be a foot-stomping good time.

The music will be provided by the Cornhusker Country Music club, an organization of people who enjoy country music and play it for many groups and organizations.

The music days are July 13-14 with square dancing on Central Saturday night. Retail co-chairmen are Jim Wood of Penney's and Dennis Jett of KNCY.

Happy birthday

to Maynard Dunlap, president of Farmers State Bank at Douglas. Mr. Dunlap, a jovial and industrious banker with a special love for the "hometown" bank, will celebrate his 80th year.

And he's tossing a birthday party. There will be a free barbecue at the Douglas park on July 9 for his many friends and customers.

Moving

The Rev. Anthony Ley, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic church, will be leaving soon for Park Falls, Wis . . . Msgr. Jerome Murray, former superintendent of Lourdes, will go to Imperial, Nebr., Richard Johnson, NCHS guidance director, has submitted his resignation to the school board. We thank each for his contributions to the community and wish them success at their new locations.

Beach Boys

No, we didn't get up to see the Beach Boys (Sally Broers said it was g-r-e-a-t) but we saw the overflow parking at Southroads. We had read that Southroads was not doing so hot in retail business, so when we saw a full parking lot, and it was full, we looked twice.

The overflow parking was handled at Civic Auditorium and Southroads and the fans transported to Rosenblatt Stadium. The Associated Press said 25,000 people were at the Stadium. We can believe it.
