The payoff
We can report that we have been paid off.
Bill Whipple of Union did it.
The gift — 1 Lynks seed corn cap.
It all started with a telephone call to the Whipple home reminding Bill and Jewel of a meeting of the Otoe County Advisory Council for Senior Citizens.
I must apologize to Jewel for it appears that my snorting, huffing and puffing because King Corn wouldn't come to the phone or to the meeting resulted in some challenging words.
When I returned from the meeting, there was the gold and black Lynks camp on my desk.
"Aw shooooot," I said. "Lookit here what that ole' Bill went up and did, cuz."
When I proudly showed off my gift to Millie, she opened the closet door, pointed to my "collection" on the top shelf and quipped.
"Okay, smarty. We're running our of room."
(I'm gonna hafta counsel with Bub Conley on these situations.)
The awards
Congratulations to the Knights of Columbus for its choices of honorees. You did a difficult but magnificent job.
The outstanding honorees are Vickie Francois, top senior student and athlete, Keith White, top athlete, his dad, Kenny White, Knight of the Year and Ranae Rettig, education recipient.
Mr. and Mrs. Ron Volkmer received the Catholic Family award. Walt Wenzl is the honorary letterman and Mrs. Glen Wilcox received the community service award.
The award.
Jack Williams of the U.S. Postal Service accepted an Arbor Day Foundation award for the special stamp issue on trees. Mr. Williams reversed the awards and offered the Foundation a leather folder with the full stamp collection for the archives.
We were seated next to Robert Rumpf of the Glatfelter Pulp Wood company at Spring Grove, Pa., and caught his broad smile when Mr. Williams announced the Glatfelter company provided the paper for the special printing.
The Dunbar Review
From the church bulletin:
— This afternoon there will be a meeting in the south and north ends of the church. Children will be baptized at both ends.
— On Sunday a special collection will be taken to defray the expenses of the new carpet. All those wishing to do something on the carpet please come forward.
The ace
Mel Todd, Sr., Union, scored a hole-in-one this spring on a golf course in Phoenix.
Mel zapped the 113-yard hole with a No. 7 at the Sun Lakes golf course in Sun Lakes, Ariz., on March 26. His golfing partner was Stanley Dahlmeier of Minneapolis.
Thanks to Harry R. Weyrich of Phoenix for the note. And, congratulations to Mel.
We'll miss you
The Nebraska City United Way board gave Wilma McIntire a gold watch on her retirement as secretary - treasurer of the United Way campaign. Mrs. Ora Babcock will take over the job.
Thanks to Wilma for working with us for so many years on stories about the United Way and the agencies asking for the money. It's a two-way street and Wilma certainly has done her share of handling her side of the block.
Little Bucks
Don Chapin will move into a new venture on Monday as owner of the former Cowboy Shop at 1213 Central Avenue. Don and Katie purchased the shop from Harlan Fenske. The new name — K Bar D. You've got it, Katie and Don. Good show. The NC rescue squad is hurting for volunteers. You can help. Call 873-3444. No pay. Lousy hours. Demanding service. To qualify — you've got to want it. When Norman Marfice and crew fire up the coal power plant at the OPPD site any day now, it will run until shut down for the annual maintenance. We're off and running on a new era. The Optimist club survey on the city election change was within eight percent of the actual vote.
