Council guided

New councilman

The Syracuse city council is bound to come up with some "guided" decisions during the next term of office.

The council has a new member and he is of the cloth.

The Rev. Elmo Ellerbrake, pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ at Syracuse, was seated the other night at the council meeting. Returned to the council were Ron Anderson and Wayne Zeiger.

Fire calls

If you're wondering why rescue crews answer some of the fire calls, it's because of a ruling adopted a few years ago.

The squad decided to answer all fire calls to nursing homes, housing complexes or other facilities where there are a lot of residents.

The fire and rescue volunteers know that in a fire emergency at such facilities, a lot of help is needed.

Dear Santa

Residents at Duff Memorial Nursing Home in Nebraska City are contributing to the happiness of the small fry by serving as telephone operators for Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.

Mrs. Warren Woodruff said the residents at Duff look forward to the calls. Children may call 873-5297 and ask to talk with Santa or Mrs. Claus.

Paul Stoll

That was a fine gesture of the Otoe County Red Cross to give recognition to Paul Stoll whc donated his 89th pint of blood the other day.

You'll be reading more about the people of Otoe county who give blood. Wilma McIntire, executive secretary of the Red Cross, said the recognition for Paul was the first of many.

Miss McIntire does all the work on the bookkeeping of blood donors and arranging for the trophies and picturetaking.

Congratulations to Wilma for dusting off the records and giving recognition to some fine deserving people. Thanks, Paul, and all of you other one pint and gallon donors. You truly make life worth living.

The report

Thanks to Dr. Larry Tangeman, president of Peru State College, and Roger Flanders of the services department and others for permitting us to participate in the meet the press program.

The senators were Bill Burrows, Adams, Calvin Carsten, Avoca, Nelson Merz, Falls City, and Jerome Warner, Waverly. The other news people were Kent Thomas, Beatrice Daily Sun, Vicki Miller of Maverick Media and Diane Sefried of radio KTNC Falls City.

The session was popular with the audience and listeners. The senators were especially helpful in answering questions and offering different views.

The faithful

A number of people said "let him go" when the word got out that NU Coach Tom Osborne was looking at the Colorado coaching job.

Not Mark Eiserman. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Eiserman, Mark graduated last spring from the University with a recreation major and he is a devoted Osborne fan.

Coach Osborne is the finest coach in the country and the finest caliber of man whe knows how to recruit and work with good, young men, according to Mark.

The Sun

Thanks to Clara Witte for the Sunday copy of the Clearwater, Fla., Sun. Mrs. Witte was in Clearwater a week ago and was thoughtful to bring along a copy of that town's fine newspaper.

Varro and Venus

Two of our favorite people are now gone. Varro Tyler, a local attorney, died several years ago. His widow, Venus, died the other day.

We are fond of unusual names and had mentioned how we favored the Tyler names. Venus always had a way of twisting it around and making it come out a compliment for the other person. It seemed that she truly exemplified the real meaning of the word, Venus.
