Oh . . . horseshoes!
Oh . . . horseshoes!
Nebraska City has been selected as the site for the 1979 State Horseshoe Championships. Two hundred or more are expected.
Walt Anderson, who claims he's a newcomer to the sport, says the competition is something else. Walt came home with a trophy from the Grand Island meet, but claims he's no competition for the Big Boys.
"They throw ringer on top of ringer. Champions ring over 90 percent of their tosses."
Nebraska City has some good state competition. There are a few around here who will toss shoes for an hour to score 50 points. The reason for the long play time is because they toss double ringers "and they don't count."
Nebraska City has 20 courts along Central Avenue in Steinhart Park.
From the pew
The little fellow was visiting the big church for the first time, and he was quite fascinated by the young but high-powered minister high abcve him in the pulpit.
Soon the pastor was waving his arms vigorously and his voice had risen almost to a shout as he tried to drive home a point.
Little Johnny became uneasy and could stand it no longer. Looking concerned, he turned to his father and whispered.
"Dad, what are we going to do if he gets loose?"
The fads
The Burr Brothers who were pictured on Page 1 the other day made a lot of us remember when crew-cuts, fuzz cuts, butches and skinheads were THE thing.
Those "Burr Boys" are Scott Herzog, Mitch Miller, Jody Hermann, Pat Haverty, Clint Denniston and Fred Stoll. Understand about a dozen boys got the short-short haircuts.
Whatever happened to the "Feather edge" haircut?
The auxiliary
The Nebraska City rescue squad is lifting its tight membership requirements to fulfill a need for ambulance service. The volunteers agreed, after a year's debate, to authorize the establishment of a volunteer ambulance crew.
Under the proposal, the squad will open its membership to volunteers who wish to serve as "auxiliary" squadsmen (and yes, women) for the sole purpose of non-emergency ambulatory calls.
Why the auxiliary? Well, according to Chief Harold Rowe the increased number of non-emergency calls has put a burden on squadsmen, mostly those who have to leave their jobs. The result will probably be more volunteers on duty during the day hours.
If you're interested in joining the squad's auxiliary, put a note in the mail or call 873-[illegible].
The actor
The news reports said actor Charles Boyer died. It took awhile to place the actor. Finally, one broadcaster pronounced it right. It's not like Boyer of Nebraska City. It's "boy—yeah." He was the French-born actor who played the romantic lead in films of the war and post-war times.
He was the favorite of many as the real lover with his accent, "come with me to the casbah."
The traveler
Our friend, Lester Ehlers, writes that he is having a grand time in Europe. Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers visited their daughter, Ardith, and her husband who is a colonel assigned to S.H.A.F.E.
Les says thanks to their daughter they have been all over Germany. "Inflation is bad here also. McDonald's hamburger is 60 cents U. S. money."
Les is a former Otoe county surveyor. He moved to Grand Island where he served Hall county as its engineer-surveyor.
The good old days
Bob Kreifels, our Minersville correspondent, had a Safety Valve the other day about the good old days during the 1920's when gas, food and other items were much, much lower in cost than they are today.
One of our readers called to explain why.
"The +-&??MmNJH+5'6 Democrats weren't in control of Congress then."
Thank you, Mr. Schemmel.
