The new printers
Jerry Wright, Whittier, Calif., is a professional artist turned printer who is rapidly discovering success and customer demand.
Jerry is the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sackles of Nebraska City. On a recent visit he shared some of his experiences in his new offset printing operation. He still does his art work, and uses that talent as a bonus offer when selling a customer.
It works, Jerry admits. The customers like it. We judged from the high quality of his printing that he didn't need our advice, but he was kind and asked for it anyway.
A number of his customers want their printed jobs "yesterday" and that's where Jerry shines. He provides the art, camera work and in a few days delivers. He can't satisfy all of his customers that way, but it's a service he does offer. And it pays well they keep coming back.
The Legion reports
"I'm sorry to announce," the women's club chairman said, "that the report of our committee on 'How to solve world population problems' must be postponed. Five committee members couldn't get babysitters and the other one is in labor."
The Jolly Trippers
The Jolly Trippers tour group returned the other day from a two-week trip to the Northwest and bubbled over with enthusiasm.
Their tour included the Badlands, Custer's Battlefield, Butte, Mont., Vancouver, B.C., Seattle, Wash., Bend, Ore., Salt Lake City, Utah, Cheyenne, Wyo., and arrived home August 4.
"We always have a great time," Ed Bottcher, tour guide said. "And as long as I'm around, we'll try to help the Jolly Trippers with a tour every year."
The Jolly Trippers organized during the State Centennial and have toured the country every year since. Next year — Nova Scotia.
The wake
Jack's smiling and since he's alive and feeling good, there will be another wake at the Legion club.
Jack Chadwick has his own wake every year at the Legion club and this year the date is August 27 from 6 to 10 p.m. Everyone is invited. He'll buy a free drink and provide you with dancing music by Max and Millie.
He has one other thing he tries to do at each wake — dance at least once with all the ladies. "I don't always make it all the way around with everyone, but I sure try."
Jack retired as resident engineer with the U.S. Corps of Engineers nine years ago and sponsors his wake-turned-party because he wants to be around to have fun with his friends.
What kind of an invitation do you need to get in the door and get your free drink — nothing. Just tell them you want to help Jack celebrate.
50th anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis (Chiona) Martin will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception Sunday in the Community Room at Midwest Federal S&L from 2 to 4 p.m.
We've known Louie for a number of years and we know it takes a good woman to put up with his cussedness.
Happy Anniversary to you. (I like that name "Chiona." It's pretty.)
That reminds me . . .
Didya hear the one about the fortune teller who advised a wife that her second husband would be handsome and clever?
When she told that to the ole' duffer he snorted.
"Do you mean to say that you were married once before and never told me about it?"
Surprise
Leonard and Ruby Meyer returned to their home in Broken Bow last week and were greeted with a number of surprises.
Yup, four of their friends had "beat" them to the house and pulled a couple of tricks on the couple.
Understand the Custer County Sheriff is looking for the four — with some sort of a charge like trespassing, disturbing the peace, or contributing to the unrest of the community.
They allegedly concoted the idea while at breakfast at Lil Duffer. As the plan emerged they flew to Utica for lunch, borrowed a car in Broken Bow, put the lunch bill on the Meyer front door, parked the borrowed car in the Meyer garage and waited out the return of the property owners.
You have to be from Otoe to think up a trick like that.
The addition
And then there's the one about the new arrival in the home and a conversation with the baby's brother.
"Well, Bobby, what do you think of your new brother?"
"Oh, he's okay, I guess, but we needed some other things a lot worse."
