You can't fool mom

You can't fool mom.

The decision

A Dunbar mother was telling friends that her three sons stick together. "When one gets into trouble, I know for sure the other two won't squeal on him."

One of the other moms asked.

"Well, how do you handle the situation and punish the guilty boy โ€” or can you find out?"

"Sure," the confident mom answered. "I just automatically send all three boys to bed without the evening meal and no TV. The next morning one of the three at the breakfast table will have a black eye."

Memorial Building

A brochure tells us about the dedication program of Memorial Building on November 11-14, 1929.

The event started with an open house with National Guardsmen as guides. The program included a Citizens' Committee meeting, a memorial service with music by Mrs. Evelyn Storms Beard and a moment of silence for the war dead.

The afternoon highlight was at Hayward park when NCHS and Auburn played football. (The score โ€” 0-0.) Judge Paul Jessen presided at the dedication ceremony. Speakers included Wm. H. Pitzer, Wm. Ritchie, Jr., Governor Arthur Weaver and Gen. H.J. Paul.

The next day was something else. There were a lot of things scheduled, but according to the News-Press story, a snowstorm caused several changes.

Dan Hill, chairman of the Chamber, headed the afternoon session. Col. R. G. Douglas and M. T. Caster, Lincoln, made it to the building to give their speeches. Varro Tyler of Nebraska City was also on the speaker's schedule.

The next day there was an open house in the Legion room in which war trophies were displayed. The speakers at the luncheon included Frank B. O'Connell, Mrs. O. W. Hahn, Mrs. Donald McCrae, John E. Curtiss, Mat Tinley and C. W. Conklin.

The snow canceled several of the athletic events, and the substitutes put on quite a show.

The much-billed boxing match between Francis Gatewood of Decatur and Bad News Murphy of Omaha ended with blood spattering and a victory by Murphy.

Two other Omaha fighters didn't make it so "Banty" Sheridan of Nebraska City and Young Miller of Shenandoah pounded away to a draw.

Johnny Watts of Omaha didn't make it so Rollin Secord took on his brother, Chink, and they gave fight fans the explosion of the night. It ended in a draw. Referee was Harry Reed.

The smoker

The Jaycees are reviving a long-time sport in Nebraska City. A boxing smoker will be March 3 at the high school gym for youths eight years of age and up. Sixteen ounce gloves will be provided.

Contact people are Robin Simmons, Coach Paul Stevenson and Charlie Fox.

The winner

Congratulations to Denise, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. F. Davis, on winning the Legion's district oratorical contest. She will now compete in the state event. We wish her much success.

The payoff

Wayne Brown returned from a buying trip to Las Vegas and the other day he offered four silver dollars as part of the return on an "investment" made by Roger McCreary. Sorry, Wayne tells the story better. Ask him.

The Sidney rodeo

Red Steagall, a country music singing star, will headline the 1978 Sidney rodeo August 8-13. The announcement of the star was made at a special dinner the other night hosted by the Sidney American Legion post. Jim Sutton is chairman of the rodeo board. Sam Kellogg, Jr., is post commander.

Steagall is popular with people. He likes to mingle with the fans. He's also popular with the cowboys. He's a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

.and then there was the one about the city official who snoozed during a retail trade committee dinner meeting at the Legion club.

Finance Commissioner Paul Tackett closed his eyes for only a moment, but it was a revealing time. In fact, the incident occurred several times during the course of the evening and one person was very much alert โ€” the waitress, Thelma Miles.

The lights were dimmed, then, brightened again.

She figured it out. Commissioner Tackett snoozed against the dimmer switch.
