A pie like yours

She's our choice.

Our choice

Congratulations to Mrs. Sev Sorensen on being nominated for the Nebraska Teacher of the Year award. The nomination was made by representatives of the School for the Visually Handicapped.

There are a whole lot of others who would like to second the nomination from moms and dads who had children in her kindergarten classes to the former students who are now adults.

A choice of words

The young pastor was new in the church community and met with an early test when he received a pie from a member of the congregation. The woman was not known for her excellence in baking.

Later, he tasted the pie and discovered it was not to his liking. He put it in the garbage can.

Then, he realized he must send a note of appreciation for the gift — wondering how he could possibly word it without offending or distorting the truth.

His note of reply read: "Thank you for the thoughtfulness. I want you to know that a pie like yours does not linger long at our house."

Scraping ice

Arthur Sweet, former publisher of this newspaper, writes in his column that drivers had to scrape ice from their windshields the other day at Flagstaff, Arizona. Art and Marguerite have a home in Sun City, but were in Flagstaff on a tour with an active group of retired people.

Our family has been driving to and from California for a lot of years (my folks live in Los Angeles) and Flagstaff has got to be the place that attracts most drivers.

It's "high" ground, always seemingly cool and at one time the waitresses used to boast about their fresh water supply coming from reservoirs of melted snow. That always turned the kids on.

I though I'd about flip when I read that his tour included Wickenburg. That was the winter quarters for many years for the late J. H. Sweet and Art was a frequent visitor there over the years. Has it changed?

A new crew

With the appointment of Officer Kim Kohout as a full-time fireman in Nebraska City, the local volunteer fire department has just about a "new crew" for the first time in many years.

Kim succeeds Ken Wiles who retires in December. Butch Rains is the "oldtimer" among the three-man crew now. The other fireman-driver is Don Hoyle who was appointed only a few weeks ago.

The rescue squad gets a "plus" from the appointment of Kohout. All three of the firemen are members of the volunteer rescue squad. Firemen handle dispatching and readying emergency vehicles and as members of the rescue squad, that job will be handled just that much smoother.

Ken will take a deserved retirement. He used to do a lot of carpentering and perhaps he'll be getting some calls when he's free from the demands of the fire department.

Lots of luck to you, Ken.

Dunno' if this is the truth because it came from Whoopie Landis . . . but Ken Wiles went into the doctor's office and the receptionist asked him what he had.

"Shingles," he replied. So she took down his name, address, medieal insurance number and told [illegible] to have a seat.

A few minutes later, a nurses aide came out and asked what he had.

"Shingles," he replied. So she gave him a blood test, took his blood pressure, gave him an electrocardiogram and told him to take off his clothes and wait for the doctor.

A little later the doctor came into the room and asked what he had.

"Shingles," he replied.

"Where?" the doctor asked.

"Outside in the truck. Where do you want them?"

Camping out

One of Nebraska City's newest and yet oldest social and fun groups is the Wewanago club. The group organized a number of years ago for overnight camping trips and have continued an active membership.

Sometime we'll have to ask one of the "oldtimers" just how long the group has been organized. We remember one of the first campouts and a frosty morning at the campsite in Wyoming precinct. The Ervin Ruffners and Eldon Mitzners were active then, too.

Congratulations gals

We join other businesses in the community in extending our recognition to the active business women during National Business Women's Week.

It was a good time for all businesses to take a look around at who's been running the store. Congrats, gals, for a good job, well done.

The sporting world

This has been an active year for sports. Nebraska City and NC Lourdes have been top ranked in football, the Pioneer volleyball teams are having a good season, Reggie Jackson gave everyone a chance to see the "big one" by belting three homers in the final game for the Yankees, the Huskers have been up and down and at present down after getting shattered by an old favorite, the "Dirty 30" from Iowa State.

But the one I like the best, is the little cutie from Romania, 16-year-old Nadia Comaneci. Her grace and poise take all the rah-rah out of the sporting events and offer just plain admiration.

Deer hunting

Virg Hastings, an official tagger for the state, will help keep readers informed on hunting success as he records permit numbers and names of hunters during the archery season.

The rifle season deer hunters must take their game to Arbor Lodge State Park for tagging and permit canceling.

A half dozen deer were bagged in the opening days of the archery season and rifle hunting usually results in the kill of 90 to 100 deer in the area.
