Welcome to Nebraska City

Something new

Welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Funke, new owners of the Sears Catalog Store at 7th St. and Central Avenue. They purchased the dealership from Mr. and Mrs. Roger Peterson.

Tom comes home to Nebraska City and brings with him many years of experience as manager of the Youngtown store at Southroads in Omaha.

Mr. Peterson has returned to Control Data and his wife will be helping out at the store until later in the week.

The town is growing

Dan Gruber, manager of Godfather's Pizza on So. 11th St., remembered when he was in high school in Nebraska City there wasn't much of an evening variety for fast foods as there is in town now.

The Omaha owners of the new Godfather's looked at the potential of opening such a business in Nebraska City and moved with eagerness.

Ed Mines and Mike Sutton said Nebraska City is a growing town and they feel their business will prosper.

They were given a royal welcome the other evening by Chamber President Garry Ailes, Mayor Fenstermacher and a host of other business people.

Welcome to town.

Your help

One of the oldest organized drives in Nebraska City is under way this week directed by Nadine Frakes of Farmers Bank and Harlan Frazier of Frazier's.

The Community Chest goal is for $23,190. Budgets for the agencies requesting funds are reviewed by the board and then the final figure established for the annual drive.

The Chest drive has had its ups and downs in campaign successes over the years, in terms of a lengthy campaign, but it is hoped that again this year, the drive can be wrapped up in a short time.

An interesting point in that line is the fact that 71 people have volunteered to serve on the committee. Wirth Davis of Jessup's is president of the Chest. The behind-the-scenes worker is Wilma McIntire. She has probably been involved in more money raising campaigns than anyone else around.

Blue rock

We joined with other sportsmen the other evening at the Otoe County Wildlife club and pumped a little buckshot in the air at those teeny-tiny blue rock. If the clay pigeons had been pheasant and quail, we can assure you of long lives if their destiny depended on my marksmanship.

Meanwhile, it was fun. A couple years ago the club had a father-son type novice shoot. We discovered our marksmanship hadn't improved much, but the trusty 20 guage responded consistently.

Kenny Gress was pushing the "pull" button and he wasn't helping matters any by sending the rock different directions, Orville Carlisle (he's having a super year in marksmanship) was no hlep because he said I had to aim and shoot by myself and Mrs. Ralph Reed wouldn't fudge for me on the scorecard.

And to make it worse, there's always some teen-age boy (or girl) who hardly looks strong enough to withstand the kick of a 12 guage, and then shatters rock consistently after shouting a squeaky "pull."

Somedays you just can't win.

Congratulations

to Mrs. Robert (Helen) Nichols, Brock, for being named recipient of a 1977 state 4-H award.

Mrs. Nichols was the Otoe county home extension agent for three and a half years and really got into the 4-H program the like of which they only have at the Otoe County Fair.

She has been active for many years in the pork producers associations and served as vice president of the National Porkettes. She also worked with pork producers in helping publish the annual October Porkfest edition.

This year, Mrs. David Guhde and Mrs. Dean Biere are co-chairmen of that project for the Capitol Pork and Southeast Quad County Producers. That special edition containing pictures, stories and pork recipes, will be published October 10 and 11.

Co. A recruits

The National Guard unit at Nebraska City has a unique recruiting program going on now.

New recruits to the Nebraska City based guard unit are given a .22 caliber lever action Ithaca rifle as a bonus. The guard unit needs some community help to increase its ranks.

Sgt. Allen Barrett said the unit has approximately 80 guardsmen in uniform, about half of the complement. The men are trying to get some interest going. Contact Sgt. Barrett or the armory [illegible] information.

The guard unit also produces a sizeable payroll for the men in uniform and that payroll is felt in the community.

She loved it

We attended three volleyball games the past week at the Syracuse tournament and were pleased with the enthusiasm shown to the players by the pep band and fans.

The late Mary Ellen Slack loved the sport, coached hundreds of girls and competed against anything to get crowds to watch her girls play. She would have loved it the other night in the championship play with the pep band, the cheers and the pep with school songs.
