Happy Birthday
To—A.M. Stephenson. It was just 54 years ago that he became the owner of Hotel Grand.
For the benefit of new residents in town, Hotel Grand was located where Midwest Federal is today. Fire destroyed the hotel a number of years ago.
"Steve" is missed on Central by his friends. He was a familiar face downtown for so many years. Not only that, his coffee drinking friends had plenty of opportunities to "stick" him for the coffee tab at the adjacent Coffee Shop.
The coffee "gang" moved across the street to the Friendship Room at Otoe County National Bank. Wilma Ohnmacht moved with them and daily serves them coffee and a smile.
From Dunbar
The entertainer was giving imitations of famous personalities when the heckler in the audience shouted for an imitation of Lassie.
The entertainer calmly looked beyond the stage lights to the audience and announced, "I'll be happy to do an imitation of Lassie if the gentleman making the request will please come forward and play the role of the tree."
The new store
Bill Rose, manager of the Earl May store in Nebraska City, is anxious to get into his new building.
The new store will open in a few days at the location on South 11th Street across from Gibson's and Larson's. The grand opening will be held November 19-20-21.
The new store not only offers more floor space but also something that Mr. Rose has needed—an outdoor display area.
Meanwhile, the building downtown will be occupied by Wayne Brown's furniture department. Mr. Brown said considerable remodeling will be done on the main floor and the basement.
The furniture department has been located above Frazier's. Mr. Brown has a big sale going on now in preparation for the move. The store ad ran in the Monday News-Press.
The hunters
Baron Volkmer, who visited with the Ron Volkmer family in Nebraska City a number of years ago, will return with some guests on a special trip.
This time, we understand the Baron from Texas will be accompanied by some industrialists. They're going hunting for pheasant.
Steve Davis
The young man from Oklahoma warmed the hearts of students and business people with his fast moving talks and appearances last week in Nebraska City.
Steve Davis, the Sooner quarterback who whopped the Huskers last year and guided the team to 32 wins during his years, says he misses football, but that's in the past now. He's looking to the future and his future is full-time for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Steve landed his twin engine airplane at Grundman airport, and spent the day speaking to groups. His last appearance was at the high school Wednesday night. He returned to the airport and left Nebraska City on a night flight home to Oklahoma.
He's a very interesting young man. If he put his enthusiasm to music, he'd have a smash hit.
He was the No. 8 quarterback for the Sooners when he first put on the pads. The rest is football history. He has been just about the greatest for the Sooners.
Mr. Davis played several positions in high school football. He claims he was never a really good player and so was not much in demand by colleges.
In fact, only one college recruited him—Oklahoma.
Now, he has a different outlook on life and he wants to spread that outlook through the FCA. There is an answer for the young and Mr. Davis says that is—Christ.
He says it's not unusual today when a high schooler says he doesn't know whether he wants to go on to school. That's the sad part, Mr. Davis says. "There are millions of kids who don't know where they are going."
Mr. Davis wants to talk with young people. He says to invest in people because God wants each person to count.
He's quite a peppy man. He talks a mile a minute, but he has a message for the young and they sure like him.
The football contest.
The football contest in the News-Press each week is sponsored by the businesses listed on the page. The contests last for the football season.
When you're judging the contest, it seems like it has been going on forever. My, my, we sure do have a lot of football fans who read the News-Press.
I read the other day in the Wayne, Nebr., Herald that the football contest winner there had seven misses in 20 games. Whoee! That guy couldn't get fifth place in the N-P contest.
Our contest runs from 193 to 249 entries each week. And, we've got another FAN sending in the clippings from the paper.
Mrs. Merle Jensen of Bennet said she has never entered, but thought she'd give it a try. Welcome to the world of sports and competition, Mrs. Jensen.
And . . . lotsa luck.
Go fly a kite, Frank
The Midwest Fall Invitational for the hang gliders will be October 30-31 in the Murray Hill area of Little Sioux, Ia., 40 miles south of Sioux City on I-29.
Competition will include a combination slalom course, foul line and target area with trophies in men's and women's divisions. The event is sponsored by the Cloud Chasers Hang Glider Club in Omaha.
Why this interest in hang gliding?
We overheard a conversation in our front office one day between our want ad gal, Norma Malzer, and her husband, Frank.
"Oh, go fly a kite," Norma said to Frank one summer afternoon. He did. He's a member of the Hang Gliders.
Wanna know something else? So's Norma. "It's a real thrill," she says.
.if you don't mind I'll stick to something safer like motorcycling (no, not Crash And Burn) and skiing in Riverview park.
