Soared to stardom overnight

Don Hollrah, Omaha, whose business is waterproofing buildings, has a hobby which will be extended to the Nebraska City area in a year.

Mr. Hollrah has purchased property owned by Lloyd Straw five and three quarter miles south of Nebraska City.

He will build a museum of antiques. Don and his wife, Jo Ann, have two children, Brian, 17 and Jimmy, three years of age.

Mr. Hollrah said footings have been poured at the site and construction will begin soon. The winter months will slow down the work, but in the spring, he hopes to get under way again.

Mr. Hollrah is no stranger to antique fanciers in this area. He has a collection of antiques at Buffalo City.

Sheriff Joe Higgins, the man who soared to stardom overnight by "checking out" owners of new Dodges, will be in Nebraska City Wednesday much to the pleasure of Harold Rowe of Rowe Motor company.

And, Harold is going to share his friend with Nebraska Citians not only with scheduled appearances at the high school and at the Rotary meeting, but rat smack dab at Rowe Motor company.

This is Sheriff Joe Higgins. He will be in Nebraska City October 18 to speak to students at Senior High at 10:45 a.m., be a guest at Rotary for lunch and return to "work" with Rowe Motor company.

"The sheriff (he's really the Dodge safety sheriff) will be with us all day beginning at 8 a.m., and we hope to keep him going until 8 p.m.," Harold said.

Joseph Hugh Patrick Aloysius Higgins shot to the top in 1969 in the entertainment business as the sheriff who appeared in one minute spot announcements by Dodge. Prior to those one minute jobbers, he spent 30 years in entertainment and had appeared in 800 television shows. He was the blacksmith on the "Rifleman" for five years.

He has a genuine interest in highway safety. His work takes him 250,000 miles each year backing up that interest.

He stands five feet, 10 inches and is a native of Logansport, Indiana. (I always thought he was from Shrevesport, Louisiana) or Hattiesburg, Mississippi).

The 60-year-old sheriff has two children, Brian, 20 and Valeria, 16. "I care about kids being safe drivers," the sheriff said.

Quoting the late clergyman Peter Marshall, Sheriff Joe says "if we don't stand for something, we're likely to fall for anything."

Or, in the words of the sheriff, "You in a heap o' trouble, boy."

We had a ball last weekend attending the Elks two-day celebration on the opening of the new home. But we were worn out when they whanged the gavel for the last time.

At the Saturday night party, I was dragging and ready to go home when I stopped for a brief visit with Mrs. Aaron Rose.

She said so many nice things about The Buck and got me so all puffed up . . . I decided to dance one more time with my mother-in-law before going home.

I don't know whether many people read this column, but I've sure met a lot of people who want to know where the "dirty bookstore" is in Lincoln.

Just in case you missed the item last week, I told about visiting a racy place where pornography (mebbe I don't know the meaning of the word) is displayed wall-to-wall.

If you watch Archie Bunker, then you'll know the answer to this riddle on his show the other night. We had a lot of fun with it:

"A father and son were involved in an auto accident; the father was killed. The son was taken to a hospital. The surgeon took one look at the child and said:

'I can't touch him — he's my son'."

Why?

The best little patient an orthodontist could ever ask for lives in Nebraska City.

She is Jody Hoskins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hoskins. Len is advertising manager for the News-Press and a sports fan from the word "go."

Guess who Jody's orthodontist is?

Dennis Claridge, the Husker quarterback who led the Nebraska football team to an Orange bowl victory a few years ago in Miami.

Doctor Claridge doesn't have to tell Jody to smile as he goes to work on braces on her teeth . . . she literally bombs him with broad smiles.

Doctors Claridge and Ludwig have an office above Savings and Loan. The ex-Husker quarterback will make his next trip to Nebraska City November 9. Guess who will be in the waiting room.

Jody?

Nope, her dad . . . with notebook and pencil.

The answer to the riddle — the surgeon was the boy's mother.
