There's all kinds of people

Nebraska Citians will decide whether the town will have a new swimming pool at a special election.

Last year students at Senior High and Lourdes pepped up a campaign trying to get interest going and the parent interest began to move through the Parent Teacher Association.

It's time we do replace the Steinhart park pool. The park board members have the responsibility of overseeing that the facility and they say we need a replacement and have recommended that to the mayor and commissioners.

Still, I can't toss away the possibilities of a year-around swimming pool. They say the cost would be $125,000 extra which seems like an unusual large amount of money for such a structure.

But the chance of using a swimming pool for something more than 10 or 12 weeks a year should be well worth consideration.

A small indoor pool was built at the School for the Visually Handicapped when the new buildings were constructed four or five years ago.

I found a friend!

This fellow says he is opposed to gun control and bureaucrats deciding whether firearms should be possessed by American citizens.

Sock it to 'em tiger!

My arsenal is a 20 gauge shotgun that fires three-inch magnum shells and a .22 caliber repeater rifle. I've owned a dozen other guns, pistols and rifles in past years and now I am considering buying that tear gas pistol advertised in the News-Press.

Read the other day that Navy Commander Lloyd Bucher, the captain who handed his ship over to the enemy, will be recommended for the highest honor Americans give — the Congressional Medal of Honor . . . surely not.

The commander said the other day that he may never be assigned as a ship commander again, but he hopes he can stay in the service for two more years to complete a 20 year hitch and retire . . . at . . . $500 a month . . .

Well, regardless of my personal opinions of the Pueblo and what follow, the world won't come to an end as a result.

Remember Gary Powers?

He was the U2 pilot who was shot down over Russian airspace and tried in a court in that country.

His mission was comparable to Bucher's and the Pueblo.

Powers is now associated with a private aircraft industry in California building, selling and test flying super secret spy-type planes.

I know a man who was urged into staying in the armed service for 20 years by his wife, even if it did mean some family separation over the years.

After 20 years, the now civilian family settled in Bellevue where he worked for a large corporation doing service repair on machines.

One day when he was in a somber mood, I questioned him.

Things had not worked out, he explained. He and the Missus were settled, the family was together every night, the children now had a permanent home, he was drawing $320 a month retirement and a nice check as a maintenance man for the company.

Trouble, is, he was doing too good a job. Because he is the type of man who does N0. 1 on his job, the company selected him for a whopper of a promotion . . . and now he will be moving lot, stock and barrel to Chicago to take over a major section of the country.

There's all kinds of people. Aren't they interesting?

The jurors who found Sirhan guilty of murdering Sen. Robert Kennedy recommended the death penalty and were applauded by spectators.

Read the other day that a 14-year-old was freed by the Supreme court of a rape conviction of an 80-year-old woman. The court found that the youth was fingerprinted in an illegal arrest.

Apparently the fact that the punk did rape the woman does not count now.

Law is a bit unusual.

Police Chief Clarence Iversen escaped a shotgun blast recently in an incident which occurred in a private home. Although police were summoned to the home by the family, the chief says he is advised there is a question of whether there is a violation of law because it happened in a private home.

The new addition to the Steinhart park, something like 66 acres will be used for golf, the Wildwood historical home, playground and picnic areas.

Along with the park expansion comes talk of a country club, or a golf clubhouse, possibly closing down the golf course on the north side of the park.
